This project involved redesigning the interior of a mid-century modern home for 21st century living, for a creative couple, alongside the design of a self-contained studio beneath the main residence. The design needed to respect the home's architectural origins while addressing spatial limitations, particularly in relation to ceiling heights and circulation between levels, and needed to incorporate art and designer furniture, with an overall focus on sustainable materials.
The main home draws on mid-century modern roots, layered with postmodern and Memphis influences to create a retro-futuristic, artistic and playful interpretation of a 1970s lounge. Natural woods, designer furniture and rich textiles provide sophistication, while bold shapes and vibrant accents bring energy and youthful character. A key challenge was integrating a functional mezzanine within existing ceiling height constraints. This influenced the overall spatial planning and furniture selection, ensuring the home remained comfortable and visually connected across levels.

The main living and dining spaces form the heart of the home, designed for conversation and creativity. These open zones flow naturally into the kitchen for ease of movement and connection. The mezzanine acts as a creative workspace for the couple, overlooking the main living space and filled with natural light. The private areas of the home are filled with warmth, character and texture, designed for relaxation and comfort.
The material palette for the main home draws on the mid-century modern foundations of the house, layered with warmth, nostalgia and durability. Depth and tactile richness is created with terrazzo flooring, natural stone, wool carpets and rich teak and walnut veneers. Earthy greens, mustards and blues reference the interiors of the 1970's but in a refined, contemporary way.

The main home features a curated selection of designer furniture and art pieces which reflect the couple's creative background and appreciation for timeless design. Iconic mid-century modern pieces such as the Eames chairs and the Eclipso dining table, provide enduring craftsmanship and sculptural forms. Artworks including bold abstract pieces by Paolo Giordano and Amy Cushing, introduce vibrant color and texture. Together, these selections enhance the home's warm, nostalgic palette and reinforce its theme of sophisticated playfulness rooted in 1970s and mid-century modern design.
